SALON/maastricht: The diary canvasses of Branko Popovic at Scope13

BRANKO POPOVIC:
Branko Popovic is a multidisciplinary artist, designer and one of the founders of Maastrichts unique fashion event FASHIONCLASH. In 2005, he graduated from the fashion/textile department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht. His work consists of fashion collections and autonomous work like photography, illustrations and drawings.
Once a year, during FashionClash, he shows his fashion collection consisting meanly theatrical show pieces, because Popovic explains he likes to balance between non-wearable clothes, the show itself and the experience of making the collection. At Scope13 in the Heggenstraat he showed five paintings. Each painting is like a diary; for months he uses it as a memo. Literally. Each diary canvas was the starting point of a collections.

Led by Dutch designers Saskia van Drimmelen and Margreet Sweerts, Painted Series is a collective that blurs the lines between fashion and performance, and expands the idea of what a garment can be.

 

GABRIEL GUEVARA:

The result of an investigation that began with questioning the relevance and meaning of luxury and the luxury-industry in our modern consumption-driven society, Silent Shout consists of a family of characters that aspire to redefine our understanding of what luxury should be all about.

Based on the role that the dandy assumes in society and the way he thinks about his essence, these personalities represent a vision that is sensitive towards the concept of ‘instrumental materialism’ (the pursuit and owning of objects for individual and social meaningful reasons), the role that accessories and jewellery play in their interaction with humans, and the potential of emptiness relative to creation, refinement and meaningfulness.

The focus lies ultimately on characters depicting differing manifestations of this vision, while in transition between the experimental and the classic state, the latter being the one in which there is absolute harmony between the different components and which would represent the fulfillment of luxury as creature: a creator.

 

KASPER HAMACHER:

Kaspar Hamacher uses fire to create objects. Fittingly named ‘ausgebrannt’ which means ‘burned out’ in german. Tree trunks have been cut into segments varying in length.
The bark is stripped from the exterior and fire is then used to hollow out parts of the trunk to create legs. Kaspar moved back to the forest where he now runs his atelier. This sculpture brought him back to his roots.

 

DESIREE HAMMEN:

Embroidery artist Desiree Hammen (1976) graduated at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem and trained at the famous Ecole Lesage in Paris, France. In her work she combines haute couture techniques with DIY skills, exploring the beauty of imperfection. For her punk and intuitive style she can be called the enfant terrible of haute embroidery couture techniques for taking traditional crafts to another level.

SALON/maastricht: Reuten & Reuten Gallery with Gem Kingdom, Esther de Groot, Mattijs van Bergen and the Season Dress of Anouk Vogel & Mattijs van Bergen

Right behind the towers of the St Servaas and the St Jan Servaasklooster is the Reuten & Reuten Gallery Amsterdam Maastricht, a formal ‘Kanunniken’ house dated from 1760, that is both a gallery and residence. Here we can admire the work of Gem Kingdom, Esther de Groot, Sanne Vogel and Mattijs van Bergen. Their work is carefully placed between the current Reuten exposition containing contemporary art objects that compliment the SALON/maastricht presentation.

SALON/Maastricht presents the Season Change Dress from fashion designer Mattijs van Bergen and landscape architect Sanne Vogel, originally created for the exhibition program ‘Fashion & Architecture’ at ARCAM in 2010.The dress is made of folded bicycle tyres, each creating a little water cup to hold a flower. The dress is like an enormous vase and its final shape depends on the flower arrangement. 

In the dining room Mattijs van Bergen shows three outifts from the ‘Starburst’ collection f/w 2013 containing long pleaded skirts of dark blue and dark green chiffon with golden yarn.

In the hall are shown three porcelain Happy Baby statues from Gem Kingdom by Johanna Titselaar and Bernard Jongstra. Gem Kingdom is a jewelry line that combines unique materials with a rich, original style: gemstones, sterling silver, wood and polyester unified in designs that breath individuality.

During SALON/Maastricht Esther de Groot, who calls herself a storyteller instead of an artist or sculptor, is showing several objects. She creates unique imperfections by creating disproportions within an object. Irrespective of the material use or application, she often works from a desire to communicate a specific story or a certain atmosphere. On this location we can see her bronze ‘figurines’, next to a religious wooden sculpture of Maria and child. The combination of the contemporary sculptures of De Groot and this antique figure of Reuten & Reuten Gallery creates a certain interaction that fits her way of working.

SALON/maastricht: who are NOMAN and Zohra Murad you could have seen in the loft of the NS?

NOMAN is a collective, founded by fashion designer Selina Parr and product designer Lara Tolman. NOMAN was born out of an idea to work together as equals, in creating an alternative world in which egos are subordinated. NOMAN is a trend moderation which can be presented in forms, colours and structures that can be applied to many fields of visual arts.

For the individual members of NOMAN, creating a collection does not end by the clothing itself, it finds expression in all aspects around it. Multiple disciplines merge together to express the fashion phenomenon, because for NOMAN fashion is more than a garment: it represents a spirit of age that can be expressed in different forms and shapes. Collaboration with various artists will add an extra dimension to the creation, with the ultimate goal to give the concept of fashion a broader interpretation.

And who is Zohra Murad, who designed that incredible dress? 

Zohra Murad (b. 1987, Kabul, Afghanistan) graduated Fashion Design in 2010 at the Academy of Fine Arts Maastricht, The Netherlands. She often uses her Afgan background as an inspiration as well as the cultures from all over the world. Her work consists of simple, clean and chic silhouettes, in which you can find traditional craftsmanship and colourful patterns.

The Heggenstraat is known for its little boutiques. No less then five SALON/locations are part of the SALON/ route, located in this little side street: Traders Pop, Wild Wild West Active Space, Muchachas Designer Boutique, Scope13 and Von Eusersdorff.

This June: SALON/Maastricht

From June 2 till June 10 SALON/ will visit Maastricht. SALON/Maastricht is a special project in collaboration with Marres-Centre for Contemporary Culture, Fashionclash, NAiM/Bureau Europa and SALON/.

SALON/ is about connecting the current SALON/ network of participants with new artists and crafts. During SALON/Maastricht the work of fifty artists and designers will be presented on several locations; it's a fashioncultural parcours that represent how a new generation of designers colaborate and move beyond the paradigmas centre and perifery, crafts and concept, fashion and art, editorial and independence. 

We hope to see you down under in the Netherlands this June.
