MOAM - a 'cross-pollination’ between all disciplines of Dutch Fashion culture' / opening 14th of June / Keizersgracht 105 A'dam

The past sixty years have been very successful for the Dutch fashion-scene, according to MOAM. MOAM is a special exhibition concept of Martijn Nekoui which he created for his graduation at AMFI. Nekoui asked 24 contemporary fashion editors, designers, writers and artists to create a personal 'translation' of the work of twelve icons of Ducth fashion history. This marvelous concept of creating a bridge between the past and the present resulted in matching combinations and translations:

Avenue Magazine (1967-1994) by Frans Ankoné translated by Sonny Groo and Marco van Rijt;

Fashion illustrator Constance Wibaut (1920) translated by Georgette Koning;

Make-up artist Ellis Faas translated by Inglot Cosmetics;  

Fashion designer Frans Molenaar translated by Jan Boelo;  

Fashion designer Fong Leng translated by MaryMe-JimmyPaul;  

Topmodel Linda Spierings translated by Marte van Haaster;  

Painter Marte Röling (1936) translated by Martine Johanna;  

Art Personality Mathilde Willink (1938-1977) translated by Aynouk Tan;  

Photographer Paul Huf translated by Petrovsky & Ramone;  

Fashion designers Puck & Hans translated by Nelleke Strijkers and Wouter van den Brink; 

Fashion designers Viktor & Rolf translated by Winde Rienstra. 

The original piece and it's contemporary translation will be exhibited side by side to create a cross-polliniation on Dutch fashion and it's disciplines.

Pictures taken by participants pre-workshop SALON/ in Istanbul last March

Last March a group of Dutch designers went to Istanbul for the pre-event workshop organized by SALON/. Students, manufacturers, brands and designers will participate in the workshop program and their results will be shown during the Istanbul Design Biennial in October 2012. 

The group selected for the SALON/ workshop is a blend of fashion and product designers: Mattijs van Bergen, Pauline van Dongen, Vroonland, Desiree Hammen, Hyun Yeu, BCXSY, Antoine Peters, Borre Akkersdijk, Noman and Reinier Bosch & Marleen Folkert.

The first part of the SALON/workshop was a two day acquaintance between the designers from Amsterdam with eventual partners, to discover traditional and contemporary craft possibilities and more. The designers will produce new products based on their Istanbul experience for the next Istanbul Design Biennial.

Turkisch Press reports on SALON/ pre-workshop for Istanbul Design Biennial

In preperation of the SALON/ edition during the Istanbul Design Biennial at the end of 2012, SALON/ and DutchDFA brought a delegation of Dutch designers to Istanbul from 22 to 27 March for a pre-event workshop. The Turkish press did not missed out on this unique collaboration:

A group of designers from Amsterdam have come to Istanbul for a workshop uniting artists, designers, craftsmen and the creative industry with producers

SALON/ is an initiative that creates a crossover experience to inspire and provoke discussion and dialogue between art, design and fashion. SALON/ initiates both an offline and an online platform to endorse artists and designers and to inspire a reflection.

Events take place at various locations in Amsterdam over a number of days, during which visitors can experience the creative works of both well-known and emerging artists and designers in different contexts. It is a dynamic and interactive social event.

A SALON/ workshop was recently held in Istanbul, as a result of cooperation between the Istanbul Design Biennial and the Istanbul Culture and Art Foundation (IKSV), with the sponsorship of fashion brand Roman.

For two days, designers from Amsterdam presented their work, their ideas and their philosophy through a visual presentation. After the presentations, a round table dialogue took place and students asked questions.

The designers selected for the SALON/ Design Biennial Istanbul project were a mix of fashion and product designers: Mattijs van Bergen, Pauline van Dongen, Vroonland, Desiree Hammen, Hyun Yeu, BCXSY, Antoine Peters, Borre Akkersdijk, Noman and Reinier Bosch.

They came up with great ideas to further collaborate with artists, designers, craftsmen and the creative industry in and around Istanbul. They shared knowledge and emphasized the importance of heritage and crafts, the unique and hand–made, as opposed to new technology.

SALON/ started in July 2010 out of frustration with the traditional way work tends to be shown: catwalks for fashion, white cubes for art and design. SALON/ thus presents fashion, design and art in different contexts, based on experience. SALON/ aims to create questions instead of answers.

It offers an inspirational platform for the designers and artists to show their ideas and offers the audience a peek in the heart and mind of these creative people. The process is most important, rather than the outcome product.

Along with creating a platform for a more imaginative society, SALON/ vitalizes the city through inspirational routing, taking you on tour through town. It aims to give you a different experience of fashion and design.

The SALON/ designers and artists were introduced to eventual partners, and got the time to discover new craft possibilities during their stay in Istanbul.

The designers, together with the students, visited museums, leather and carpet ateliers, and artisans all around Istanbul.

The designers will produce new products based on their Istanbul experience for the next Istanbul Design Biennial.

Salon/ goes on! Pre-event workshop March 22 till 27 for SALON/TR during 'Istanbul Design Biennial' in Turkey (October 13 - December 12, 2012)

In cooperation with DutchDFA SALON/ is bringing a delegation of Dutch designers to Istanbul from 22 to 27 March for a pre-event workshop programme of the Istanbul Design Biennal. Students, manufacturers, brands and design professionals from around the world participate in the workshop programme.

The Dutch designers will collaborate with craftsmen from Istanbul, within the theme imperfection. The designers will be in Istanbul, between 22-27 March, to proceed about their product, material, production method decisions with the workshop participants. Results will be shown during the Biennial in October. 

Participating Dutch designers are Mattijs van Bergen, Pauline van Dongen, Desiree Hammen, Noman (Selina Parr/Lara Tolman), Antoine Peters, Borre Akkersdijk, Hyun Yeu, Sjoerd Vroonland, Reinier

The Dutch Design Fashion Architecture (DutchDFA) programme aims to strengthen the international position of the Dutch creative industry sector in four focus countries, by building long-lasting international partnerships and focussing on topical issues and local demands.
