Painted will present during WinterSALON/ 2012: Painted Secret.

Painted Secret is a limited edition of 24 related tops and shifts.

Painted Secret provides a space in which makers and wearers meet.

Painted Secret appears in a videoclip

Painted Secret is a series of delicate, fully fashioned knitted camisoles and 'shifts' in silk/cashmere yarn, worn as a secret to the skin. The pieces stem from the same pattern, machine-knitted in different colour variations.

They have evolved into unique pieces, by the addition of Bulgarian handlace and woven clothing elements.

The various hands and the machine complement each other in this work.

Painted Secret is a brief window of time where Painted will be ‘live’ at Droog,

Staalstraat 7b in Amsterdam: from Wednesday February 1st until Sunday February 5th 2012, during Droog

store opening hours ( daily 11:00-18:00, Sunday 12:00-17:00 )

During this time, Painted Secret can be tried, bought and ordered and Painted will work on the spot.

Painted Secret is a short film, a video clip of the band Toversex (Erzsi Pennings and Pieter Wackers) starring Natascha Dejong (SYTYCD) dancing Painted Secret to life.

The premiere of this film will be at the opening of WinterSALON/ on January 21st, 14:00 in Droog, and will be on show until February 5th.

The knitwear was commissioned for the collection and developed with Audax Textiles Museum Tilburg/Textilelab.

Led by Dutch designers Saskia van Drimmelen and Margreet Sweerts, Painted Series is a collective that blurs the lines between fashion and performance, and expands the idea of what a garment can be.

Thomas Voorn creates colourfulenvironmental friendly landscape pollution. He travels aroundwith bags full of clothes, his alphabet, to create Garment Graffiti in atypical colour range.

In several photo series the garments andletters are subtly pushed to their limits. Garments are thrown into a duckweedditch, hung up as washing in a winter forest and layed out on rooftops,creating surreal confrontations with words for a passerby. At times the garmenttypography appears as leftovers of a person undressed, looking for frictionbetween clothes, text and context. Thomas Voorn developed his unique 'textile typography' in 2006, resulting in several projects and commissions.

For winterSALON/2012 he creates a unique GarmentGraffiti at the Bijbels Museum.

About the designer

Thomas Voorn (Breda, 1977) is a designer |artdirector based in Rotterdam, Holland. He works in a multidisciplinaryway to create design concepts and translates these into commercial prints,products and projects for a wide range of clients.

In each project he demonstrates his contemporaryvision on colours, prints and products with his signature style. Looking for acontemporary clash and match of colours and prints. Pushing borders and subtlytwisting reality. Thomas Voorn winks to daily life.

Thomas Voorn works on commission base ondesign projects from his studio in Rotterdam. Fleur Goedendorp (b.1982) is a designerwho works intuitively throughout her fascination for materials, constructionsand patterns. Just by DOING it and looking closely at the features of her self made constructions, she gives shape and function to their constructions.

An interestingfeature of this braided cotton graffiti is that she discribes it as being hollow. She said: 'In myopinion this construction asks for an inside, and therefore a way to be heard andshaped. This is how these“wall-words” came to life.'

Visit the Tassenmuseum Hendrikje to see Fleur Goedendorp special installation on one of the walls in the museum. Look around every corner to find it, because like the work of other participants in this museum, it is hidden between the permanent collection of bags and purses.

Robin de Vogel, a third yearstudent at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy who has lived in Aruba, is fascinated bythe tangible signs of time, particularly those observed in architecture. These'signs of decay' as she calls it are considered to be a flaw or something ugly.And therefore ignored. Robin de Vogel started repairing the holes and cracks inthe city center of Amsterdam with self made pieces of ceramics which she glazedin a decorative manner, highlighting the signs of decay in the architecture bymaking them into little ornaments. She said: "In my work Itry to pose questions about perception. The pieces blend in with thearchitecture and their presence is subtle, but at the same time they have adelicate decorative quality that grabs the viewers' attention. The projectposes questions about aesthetics and underlines the temporal aspect oflife". Acrossthe winterSALON/2012 locations, she has repaired a tile, a broken curb, missingcement, or a hole.

The &Foam Concept
&Foam is a unique concept store located at Vijzelstraat 78, selling photography magazines, books, prints and more. Four times a year, &Foam engages in collaborations with special partners on the interface between photography and other creative disciplines. 2012 begins with Fashion&Foam, and is followed by Music&Foam, Design&Foam and Film&Foam.

&FOAM and SALON/ - 'Onder Anderen...'
In collaboration with SALON/, Niels Klavers will present his exhibition 'ONDER ANDEREN…' in &Foam. For this, he has invited twenty alumni of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie to provide a distinctive item from their collection. The presentation, in the form of a unique installation, contains applied art pieces and original designs, and reflects the vision of the Academie's fashion department over the past twenty years. The design of the installation is by architectual bureau X+L, which was also involved in the design of &Foam's interior.

About Niels Klavers
Since september 2011 fashion designer Niels Klavers is in charge of the Fashion department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. From 1999 till 2011 he and Astrid van Engelen runned their own fashion brand Klavers van Engelen. Niels Klavers graduated at the Rietveld in 1995.

About X+L
X+L stands for Xander Vervoort and Leon van Boxtel, two Amsterdam bassed designers who works together since 1987. Studio X+L, founded in 1996, focus on interior design, corporate spaces and gardens and stage design. For SALON/Design in 2011 they created a special installation for Klavers van Engelen at Droog, Amsterdam.

winterSALON/2012: 'Dis/-Functional Fragmanted Wardrobe' - Femke de Vries @ Geelvinck/Hinlopenhuis

During winterSALON/2012 product designer Femke de Vries - alumnus of ArtEZ Fashionmasters - presents in museum Geelvinck a series of constructions in which she uses ‘contexts where clothes exist beyond its wearer’, as a starting point.

Most of the works by Femke de Vries are fashion related, some in result other in process. Her multidisciplinary approach of fashion related values started an ongoing process in which she questions the myths of products, (context, temporality, definition) and refers to the subjective view of the artist and public. By doing so, she tries to show hidden meanings, myths. She explains: "Myths, according to Roland Barthes, submit what is considered as natural, universal and self-evident. Though this is actually culturally and historically determined and therefore not natural or self-evident”.

Therefore her works aren’t developed with the aim to be final. The products, installations and publications are mostly fragments of a process in which meaning and definition is questioned. She often, to challenge the process, chooses a tightly constructed starting point to see what happens when executed. Like ‘making sure a product refers to nothing beside itself’ or ‘reducing the role of the designer to a minimum’.

Is this the under or upper side of Desiree's embroidery?

Embroidery artist Desiree Hammen (1976) studied at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem and is trained at the famous Ecole Lesage in Paris, France. In her work she combines haute couture techniques with DIY skills, exploring the beauty of imperfection. For her punk and intuitive style she can be called the enfant terrible of haute embroidery couture techniques for taking traditional crafts to another level.
During winterSALON/2012 Desiree Hammen created a special piece, called 'Follow me into the nowhere', inspired by song lyrics of Crystal Castles. Intrigued by the fact that in embroidery the bottom part is as beautiful as the visual part but never showed, she turned things upside down by focussing what's litteraly under the surface. And not removed the treads - a tabboo in terms of haute couture! Desiree explains: "If one embroiders a cloth there always is an upper side and a bottom side. While working I discovered that all these loose and unfinished threads on the bottom side form an interesting interplay. Thereafter I started developing this interplay on purpose in order to integrate the two sides of the embroidery frame into one work. The work is illuminated by blacklight, or UV light. This light shines through the matter (surface) and in this way it creates a world like a galaxy."

'Ungraspable communication; the understandings of send and received information between two ormore individuals. An interpretation of what is being considered understood in an act of a conversation'. With these words Ken Wolff describes his video 'Your opinion, My opinion' he created for winterSALON/2012, exhibited in the Bijbels Museum in Amsterdam.
The video shows a woman and a man, standing across each other, saying nothing. Their facial expression we cannot see due to their black painted faces. Only for a moment a flash of lightning reveiles animated eyes, nose, cheekbones of the models.
This video is about non verbal communication, Ken Wolff explains. He deliberately casted a woman and a man because they often have another way of expression, what can lead to miscommunication.
Ken Wolff (Aruba, 1983) is a visual artist and VJ currently living in Amsterdam and is studying at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. His work moves between video art, handdrawings and Animation with a sense of raw, playful, yet professional edge and is mainlyinfluenced by his Caribbean descent. His company Wolff Independents is a media production company focusing on creativevideos, animations and short films.

Marga Weimans (b.1970, Rotterdam) is an international oriented designer that expands herself to multiple disciplines including fashion, architecture and fine arts.

Weimans graduated at the prestigious Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts with her collection 'The Power Of My Dreams’ (2005), of which two designs are displayed at the Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder during WinterSalon/2012. This collection shows the power of dreaming, convinced by the idea what you dream is who you are. In this collection love, fame and success – three elements we all dream of – is reflected in the creations, but the key theme is also the dreams of strong black woman in today’s society. Weimans designs symbolize the eccentricity, political incorrectness and dignity that come to play analyzing the contemporary black woman.

Furthermore, Marga Weimans will present an installation in Museum Willet Holthuysen during winterSALON/2012, which is called 'Hermès Bag by Night'. This object form an exploration of shape and first experimental study on ultimate luxury goods, the obsession with such handbags, the texture of crocodile leather, and classical and most sought after shapes in the market, but distill such aspects to interiors and the facades of buildings. This object was exhibited in TENT Rotterdam.

Weimans pushes the boundaries of the fashion industry with her collections varying from haute couture to pret-a-porter, architectural showpieces and minimalistic dresses. She wants to show her personal development and innovation in her creations. She incorporates elements of nature and space, using earth tones and natural fabrics. She works with 3D perspectives and her designs include materials like wood, iron, resin and fabrics mixed with fiberglass.

Weimans graduated in 2005 as a fashion designer at the prestigious Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Her graduation collection The Power Of My Dreams won the i-D award in 2005 which is organized by worldwide fashion magazine i-D. With this collection she was also nominated for the Design Prize Rotterdam. Weimans' work is purchased by and exhibited at the Dutch Groninger Museum. Her collections were presented in two haute couture weeks in Paris and in several exhibitions in in the Netherlands.

Edwin Oudshoorn makes couture clothing but does notlimit himself to what is currently in fashion. Instead, much of his work comesfrom the observation of people and places around him. Edwin Oudshoorn graduatedon Fashion Design at the ArtEZ institute of the Arts in 2004 with a collectionbased on his experiences growing up in a small village. Since then, amongstothers, he has been asked to present collections at the Rijksmuseum inAmsterdam, Gemeente Museum in The Hague and the Teylers Museum in Haarlem. Heshowed his collection ‘Pining for the Heavens in 2010 at Mussee de la vieRomantique in Paris during the Couture Week.

Last summer, he presented the collection ‘Wie einHinde’ as part of SALON/2 in Amsterdam and was invited to take part in thefirst Aruban fashion week, also as part of SALON/ and Aruba In Style.

During winterSALON/2012 Edwin Oudshoorn will exhibithis collection he designed especcialy for Aruba In Style at his new Atelier,found at the Oudezijds Voorburgwal 97. Also, Edwin will show in the etalage of Maison de Bonneterie.

winterSALON/2012: Painted Table Dress at Museum Van Loon

Painted Table Dress

Inthe spirit of Painted Series, where designs evolve with more than one pair of hands, Saskia van Drimmelen and MargreetSweerts of Painted created a special conceptfor AIS SALON/ in Aruba last november 2011: the Painted Table Dress. It’s a dress annex table cloth in orderof a special workshop: 16 people, varying from social workers, creativeartists, local entrepreneurs and a fashion blogger, who get together to embroideron this table dress.

The assignment of Painted to the volunteers was: embrace whatyou get, like it is a gift, and bring it a level further. In other words: yourcreations will be the starting point for someone else. Like a canon. And that'snot easy, to let go your personal embroidery you have worked on!

Duringthe workshop Saskia and Margreet explained a few basic embroidery techniquesand created a visual dialogue with the colorful yarns between the mixture ofpeople. All participants of the workshop made a fantasy fish, water waves, a fantasybird and treads that leaded to the top of the cloth.

The end result

ForPainted it was an emotional moment seeing their effort and creation gettogether so well on the day of the final presentation, when the dress was reveiled as part of a special performance by dancer Alydia Wever. It was exactly what they wished for when they created the ideaof a table dress two years ago. "It felt really, really good, its adisclosure so perfect it moved me deeply", Margreet Sweerts said. Sakiavan Drimmelen: "The idea was already there, but never the right moment. Wewere asked two years ago to create a table cloth, but just making a table clothand present it in a shop felt unnatural and not 'painted' like. I knew allalong this table cloth should be a made by more than one pair of hands. I sawpeople sitting around the table and embroider together, even when you never didthat before. I am really happy with the result."

Dying goes together with hope, despair, fear,struggle, denial, impalpability and vulnerability.

COLLECTIE ARNHEM is a fashion collection thatis created every year by third year students of the bachelor Fashion Design at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem. Creating this collection the students do everything themselves: from concept and designing to styling and managing the show. In this process they not only learn to relay on the designing skills which are trained, also business and organisation skills will be discovered during this special third year of their fashion education. Arink (1967) graduated at the Willem de KooningAcademie in Rotterdam and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. She won the First Prize Prix de Rome Sculpture 1992. Her work is showed from Belgium to Tokyo, and now she will surprise us with new work on winterSALON/2012.

During AIS SALON/ in Aruba last november Anne Bosman presented his graduation collection he made at ArtEZ. Between all other participants of the so called ´Dutch Group Show´ Anne was the most conceptual and maybe even most bizar fashion collection for the people of Aruba who in general likes bikini´s, bright colors, and feminine glamour clothing. But now the audience could see what Dutch fashion and fashion design holds more, even when it comes to men´s wear.

Anne Bosman was over the moon when he heard he could show at Aruba, he flew over for just three days to witness this presentation. Anne Bosman tells us about his ideas and proces behind this remarkable men´s wear collection.

Anne Bosman: “A while ago I saw a serial portraits of Japanese emperors, they were all pictured sitting, where their kimono was folded to a three dimensional piece of art. So, it all started with a fascination for dictators and emperors. It is the way they’re dressed, very powerful, big and strong. Sometimes a little bit feminine. Funnily, this image also reminded me of children who wrap fabrics around their body and creating their own sculptures and stories.

To research my silhouettes I used two ways: the first one was to try on an oversized kimono in every possible way, also in combination with other fabrics; the second was to increase baby clothing to my own nowadays size. This brings total new silhouettes for men, because a pattern for a baby has other proportions then which for adult man. During my research the silhouettes also reminded me off when I was a little boy running through gardens, wearing my father´s jacket. I felt huge! Or, I putted on two towels and I became Julius Caesar! With this collection I wanted to recall that powerful sense, that feeling I had as a child, but now for grown up men.”

The specialty of photographer Maurice Scheltens (1972) and visual artist Liesbeth Abbenes (1970) is to meticulously arrange objects - chairs, glassware, shirts, perfume bottles - into configurations that have a strong two-dimensional or graphic character. Scheltens & Abbenes reduce their objects to clean geometric lines, showing an understanding that the settings will ultimately only exist as a two-dimensional image. Essential to their work is the process in the studio where they construct their settings. A laborious process, in which Scheltens & Abbenes continuously move things around, painstakingly join pieces together and adjust little details. During this series of steps they take numerous shots and study them together intensively in order to arrive at the right composition.

Pauline van Dongen

Pauline van Dongen's fascination for the relation between human and their surroundings is something that keeps feeding her inspiration. By working with sculptural shapes, forms like capsules floating around the body, she examines the space between the garment and the body and tries to emphasize that void in her designs. In 2008 Pauline graduated with a BA in Fashion Design from the renowned Artez, Academy of the Arts in Arnhem, the Netherlands.

Telka van Dodewaard: 'If you still don't get it, you never will'

Between ceramic artifacts, shell and stone tools and pre-historic ornaments displayed for all those who would like to know about Aruba's first cultures, stands Viktor & Rolf and Telka van Dodewaard.

One could call Telka’s work strongly narrative. Constantly she displays an unwritten story but without giving the view room for his own interpretation. Returning themes in her work are the vulnerability of a human being and the inherent decay through time and of life, what we also see in the installation she created for AIS SALON/. With a wink to fashion Telka van Dodewaard is showing the installation 'If you still don't get it, you never will', made for the old water well in the Archaeological Museum. Her installation is about beauty and it’s glorification. She explained that obscuring the ugliness and the ugliness itself go hand in hand. The materials she used for this installation are mostly textile and ceramics, what reflects Telka’s background as a sculptor.

Telka van Dodewaard (b. 1977, Maastricht, the Netherlands) lives and works in Aruba and Amsterdam. She graduated from the art academy Maastricht in 1999. She started a masters degree at the Rietveld Academie, the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam, graduating in 2002.

A Winter's Dream in tropical conditions: Viktor & Rolf's fur coat in Aruba

The archeaological museum of Aruba was once a luxurous urban villa, where a European lady lived who missed the cold winters of her homeland. She created a winter room, where she sat in her winter coat, dreaming away while she gazed at the winter portrets of white mountains, moose, lakes, and other images. This former winter room was the perfect location to present the white fur coat of Viktor & Rolf of the Flower Bomb collection 2008.

Efrem Angelo & Philippe Vogelenzang make strong statements about the other side of luxury @ Renaissance Mall (next to the Louis Vuitton shop), Aruba AIS SALON/

Above: Street Art of Efrem Angela, a paradoxal statement about what Aruba should be, but isn't. Efrem used a poem of Juan Chabaya Lampe (the Father of the Carribbean) what describes a love for Aruba on one hand, but the loss of Arubas identity and culture on the other. Efrem feels tourism, the focus on America and the luxury leisure his island is exposed to, threatens the real Aruban culture. The last two lines are about the reality, how it is not how it should be, the love, the ideal....therefore Efrem almost pushed his pen through the wall....and was it ready for the trashcan when he finished.

Right accross the statement of Efrem hangs the suitable work of photographer Philippe Vogelenzang: tombstone-shoe soles of the biggest, most influentual fashion luxury brands (see under). Has real luxe died or is it killing us?

AIS SALON/ supports BRA-ART, a project for the awareness of breast cancer

SALON/ goes further than exposing the endeptment of contemporary fashion and design cross overs, we also like to support projects who give room for yougsters to explore their creative abilities. Like Bra-Art, a project of Atelier 89 of Elvis Lopez, an Aruban artist who started this Visual Arts Academy in 1989 and who coordinates numerous artistic projects on the island.

Last friday the resultst of a workshop for kids about the awareness of breast cancer was opened. Most of the children had witnessed the effect of breast cancer near by. They have customised bra's with various results. In this workshop they learned how to symbolise an emotion, a happening or a story into a personal piece of bra-art.

This project was supported by Mary Joan Breast Cancer Support Group

Heinrich 'Real men wear pink' Gonzalez entitled his creation 'Hey beautiful lady, which side do you choose'. His aunt survived breast cancer. He first made the bra, but was not satisfied. He created a body with one dammaged breast with cancer to enforce his message. For two months he worked on his bra-art project. Well done, Heinrich !

Meet Marylou Hermans, a girl whose gransmother survived breast cancer and still enjoys her life. Marylou wanted to symbolise the way her grandmother dealed with her cancer. The roses symbolise beauty as well as blood, she tells me. The weaves and curls on the side of the bra symbolise transformation and movesment, that live goes on. And the peacock she made herself, stands for the pride her grandmother showed, with and after her cancer.

Magnificant ending of the Painted Table Dress process in Aruba

Friday afternoon time stood still on the shores of Aruba. On the dock of Roger's Beach, near San Nicolas, we witnessed a breath taking presentation and performance of the Painted table dress, made during the social embroidery workshop earlier this week with 16 participants at Scol di Arte.
On the sounds of a traditional Aruban piano box, musician Michael Lampe leaded dancer Alydia Wever, dressed in the table dress, from water to land where a long table waited to be covered by the table dress. Alydia Wever danced with the long embroidered cloth folded in her arms, like it was a new born ready to present to the outside world. When she reached the table, she softly song repeatedly an Aruban lullaby called 'Maria ta den Cushina' (about Maria who ask us to come to the table and see what she has prepaired). Two girls, dressed in creations of Painted Series, made subtle sound effects of people with clinking wine classes. At final, when the table was covered, the girls put water glasses on the table, while Alydia Wever put off the table dress, walked back to the water and dissapeared with a elegant dive.

For Painted it was an emotional moment seeing their effort and creation get together so well. It was exactly what they wished for when they created the table dress concept two years ago. "It felt really, really good, its a disclosure so perfect it moved me deeply", Margreet Sweerts said. Sakia van Drimmelen: "The idea was already there, but never the right moment. We were asked two years ago to create a table cloth, but just making a table cloth and present it in a shop felt unnatural and not 'painted' like. I knew all along this table cloth should be a made by more than one pair of hands. I saw people sitting around the table and embroider together, even when you never did that before. I am really happy with the result."
Afterwards I spoke shortly with Alydia Wever, who still swom in the water....and so was I. She told me that since she lived in Queens, New York where she danced, she collected nice fabrics and textiles without doing anything with it. So, for her it was also a beatiful moment to dance with accual fabric in stead of only wearing it as a costume. And the teamwork made her dancing today right from the heart.

AIS SALON/ presents: Robin de Vogel, a girl with a monumental mission

Robin de Vogel, a third year student at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy who has lived in Aruba, is fascinated by the tangible signs of time, particularly those observed in architecture. These 'signs of decay' as she calls it are considered to be a flaw or something ugly. And therefore ignored. Robin de Vogel started repairing the holes and cracks in the city center of Amsterdam with self made pieces of ceramics which she glazed in a decorative manner, highlighting the signs of decay in the architecture by making them into little ornaments. She said: "In my work I try to pose questions about perception. The pieces blend in with the architecture and their presence is subtle, but at the same time they have a delicate decorative quality that grabs the viewers' attention. The project poses questions about aesthetics and underlines the temporal aspect of life".

Across Aruba and the AIS SALON/ locations, she has repaired a tile, a broken curb, missing cement, or a hole. Robin: "The buildings chosen for AIS SALON/ are of great historic and cultural value for Aruba. The work can be seen as something that ties all these locations together. I hope to make a statement with this work emphasizing the importance of maintaining these constructions for generations to come."

Alydia Wever's fascination for Frida Kahlo was encouraged by the biography of Hayden Herrera in 2002. Alydia Wever: “Frida Kahlo has become a universal role model as the independent feminist whos physical, emotional and spiritual pain is shaped in confrontational and intrusive images”. Since then, Wever began her artistic journey to give shape to a new multidisciplinary dance theater project called ‘Muhe Frida’, where she and many friends have worked on for almost two years.
‘Muhe Frida’ shows seven paintings of Frida Kahlo in scenario form. Combined with modern dance as the basis, four young female guest dancers from Aruba, Holland, Cuba and Canada gave a dynamic interpretation and adoration for the female power of Frida Kahlo. The show started outside, where different Frida’s waited like frozen soldiers, in front of the audience. The second part of the show was in the lobby, where pupils of Alydia Wever danced with painted skull faces. Part three was the equal show.
Every time the curtain opened, a new painting revealed, as well as the costumes & art work (various Aruban designers have cooperated on this project), atmosphere and style of music, the over-all choreography, the emotions of the movements, the combination of video art, Frida’s poems, Mexican songs, the light….but most of all the resemblance and identification of Alydia Wever with her idol Frida Kahlo was remarkable.
After the premiere in Cas di Cultura, Aruba's main theater house, a special 'Muhe Frida' exposition was opened, where contemporary female artists had created art works inspired by the life or the work of Frida Kahlo.

The work of Jess Wolff is about superstition, what refers as well to herself as the Aruban culture. When its full moon, they believe that you have to cut your hair, or that the next day you will transform yourself.
The dress Jess Wolff created is a ritual full moon dress, that symbolizes the pulling and drawing force a full moon has on her. “I was born on a full moon eve”, she said. Therefore she will perform in this dress on her 30^th birthday to worship it. The hair on front of the dress and the wrinkles in the skirt symbolise the moon's pulling effect: “ Its pulling from the core, the roots from out of the ground”.

One Painted Table Dress and 16 pair of hands who embraced the gift of the other

Saskia van Drimmelen and Margreet Sweerts of PAINTED presented a new concept for AIS SALON/ in Aruba: the painted table dress.
In the spirit of Painted, where designs evolve with more than one pair of hands, they designed a dress annex tablecloth in order of a special social workshop. 16 people - varying from social workers, creative artists, local entrepreneurs and myself - get together to embroider on this table dress with a nice top at the end.
Their assignment to us was: embrace what you get, like it is a gift, and bring it a level further. In other words: your creations will be the starting point for someone else. Like a canon. And that's not easy, to let go your first embroidery you have worked on full of ideas and expectations about the result!

During the workshop Saskia and Margreet explained a few basic embroidery techniques and created a visual dialogue with the colorful yarn between the mixture of people. All participants of the workshop made a fish, water waves, a fantasy bird and treads that leaded to the top of the cloth.
The end result is showed last Friday by a local performer, Alydia Wever, who will dance a custom made choreography dressed in our co-created table dress. Read more about this performance on this blog or click here.

One of the ambitions of SALON/ is to bring people, disciplines and cultures together for understanding and creation. Starters learning from the established, via workshops, discussions and exhibitions.

Established fashion designers Edwin Oudshoorn, Mattijs van Bergen and Marga Weimans are asked to give a workshop for the youngsters of San Nicolas, a less prosperous part of Aruba, on the 6th and 9th of November 2011. What will our Dutch fashion trio have in store for these kids? Creating clothes with the use of unusual materials, with paper or without sowing?

The workshop is part of Art Rules Aruba, an art project to give children and adolescents an opportunity to explore other interests and talents in film, photography, theater, dance, rap, painting, fashion and product design. What kind of creative abilities do these kids have and were 'hidden' before?

SALON/ will be there to see who will have an 'Ah-HA' moment and discover that he or she has a distinctive vision.

The preparations for the dance theatre performance ‘Muhe Frida’ of Alydia Wever are well underway. After two years of preparation and a film, everything is coming together for the premiere on November 2nd 2011.

Already during her study in New York, Alydia Wever fell under the spell of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. “I saw the film about her life and cried from beginning to end. At the time, I saw the film together with my mentor and even then I thought it would be beautiful to make a dance performance about her life.” Years later – two years to be exact – she returns to the project. “Frida was someone who had been through a lot and suffered much pain, both physically and emotionally. I recognized myself not only in that pain but also in her willfulness, will and progressive character. I thought about doing this project.” That’s how ‘Muhe Frida’ came about, a multidisciplinary project seeking interfaces between the liberated painter and the Aruban female. “In first instance, I wanted to dedicate this to women, but I found out that everyone has interfaces with her life. Frida was so full of live and battle. Although one of her legs was shorter, she loved to dance. I think if she had wanted to, she could just as well have become a famous dancer.”

For the performance, Wever invited two pupils from all four dancing schools on the island to join in. “I want to promote cooperation and unity between the schools and the dancers on Aruba. After all, we are all together here and the aim is to make something beautiful together.” Wever also invited several dancers from abroad, for instance, the Dutch Anne-Fay Kops – who performed earlier in the diner show of Zissles – and the Canadian Geneva Jenkins. “They arrived one and a half week ago and are now working hard on their parts.” Furthermore, Michael Lampe, known from Datapanik and Fellow, will arrange original compositions and six artists are associated with the performance. Together with Alydia Wever, Osaira Muyala, Alida Martinez, Glenda Heyliger, Nadine Salas, Belinda de Veer and Irene Peterson will give a performance of seven scenes based on seven paintings from Frida Kahlo, with devised archetypes from the Mexican artist. These archetypes – varying from the Saint Frida, the Macho Frida and the Tormented Frida up to the Erotic Frida – were invented at the time by the Curaçao producer Felix de Rooij for the short film ‘Muhe Frida’, as shown at the Aruba International Film Festival. De Rooij is no longer involved with the dance theatre performance. “Eventually, we couldn’t work things out together”, says Wever. This resulted in two projects with the same name and the use of seven archetypes of Frida Kahlo. However, the dance theatre project is entirely different. “As regards contents, the emphasis is on the chosen seven paintings and as regards form the emphasis is on the dance theatre.” The film itself will be given a separate place during the evening of the performance. Works of 21 artists will be shown in the exposition room of Cas di Cultura. The exposition, led by Ryan Oduber, will also include Salon, the Dutch part of the fashion event Aruba In Style that is to start on November 3rd.

The premiere of ‘Muhe Frida’ will be on November 2nd, the Mexican holiday Dia de Los Muertos. Tickets for the evening will cost 50 florins. There are also several performances for schools and a second performance on November 5th. Tickets for this performance will soon be available and cost 25 florins.

Aruba and the Netherlands have an historical connection.

"Aruba is still one of the four constituent countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands, together with the Netherlands, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten whose citizens share a single nationality: Dutch citizen. In March 1983 Aruba finally reached an official agreement within the Kingdom for Aruba's Independence, which would occur in a series of steps granting increasing autonomy. In August 1985 Aruba drafted a constitution that was unanimously approved. It is now over 25 years Aruba has the so called “Status Aparte”. But the relationship with the Netherlands remains and will always be something special. It's in the DNA of Aruba.

Therefore, an impressive number of Dutch Fashion & Design will join SALON/ to Aruba!

For example, during the Aruban fashion week Aruba In Style Mattijs van Bergen, Marga Weimans, Edwin Oudshoorn and three fashion design graduates of ArtEZ Art Academy will present their collections on the runway on the 4th of November 2011.
But there is more: during the special 'Mens Club' on the 3rd of November Dutch men's fashion designers like Hyun Yeu and Quoc Thang will be represented. In the various locations of AIS/SALON we can also see several couture pieces of our international fashion pride Viktor & Rolf, collected by a private collector of the finer arts of various international and local fashion talents. And there is more Dutch fashion: Bas Kosters, Marcha Hüskes, Claes Iversen, youasme measyou, Antoine Peters, Pauline van Dongen, and Saskia van Drimmelen and Margreet Sweerts of Painted Series who organise a special workshop called Painted Table Dress (2+3 Nov.)

Other Dutch representatives on AIS/SALON are photographers Philippe Vogelenzang, Viviene Sassen, Freudental/Verhagen, Fur Free, Scheltens Abbenes, Zara Zerny and Mustafa Ozen.

Yesterday The Wallstreet Journal columnist CHRISTINA BINKLEY reported about the amount of fashion weeks around the world: "Milan, Paris and London. At these events, designers parade their collections for retailers and try to make a splash in the fashion press. But in the past five to 10 years, the numbers of cities and nations holding fashion weeks has burgeoned."

Unfortunately we could not read the whole article, but one of our facebook friends summerised it for us.

Miss Ramirez wrote: "...they say that all the small fashion weeks that have been organized in recent years around the world do not really make a significant impact when it comes to fashion trends, compared to Milan, Londen, Paris and New York. But they still can boost local economies by pushing the fashion and retail business locally".

Like initiator of the Aruban Salon, Gijs Stork, puts it: "Wherever SALON/ lands, whether it is Aruba or Istanbul, we aim for discussion and interaction between the local population, the local history and its art culture.[...] But most of all we would like to show the local population what is happening over seas, what is possible."

But what do you think? What is the value of local fashion weeks? Entertainment? Business? A hype? A signal that local fashion gets more appreciation and attention than the very expensive luxury brands nobody can really afford?

Personally I think the last thing is happening here, and is a significant impact after all: local is sexy, is personal, and is something to be proud of. As a Dutch girl I rather would buy something of a Dutch designer than of one of LVMH's mass-luxury brands....if I only had the money.

Celebrate the local fashion culture, find exciting cross overs, that's what SALON/ is about.

SALON/ looks for new paths, new places and locations to give exposure to known and unknown artists, designers and the likes. To create a context for discussion and cross-cultural productions on grounds which maybe are not obvious when you think of fashion, art and design is what opens your eyes....or resets your gaze in how you previously interpreted contemporary art, fashion and design.

From 3-13 November 2011 SALON/ will be in Aruba....Aruba? Is there more to enjoy than sun, beaches, parties and a relaxing lifestyle? Why Aruba?

What better than to ask the question why to the initiator of this Aruban SALON/ edition, Gijs Stork himself:

Salon/BLOG: Why Aruba, Gijs?

Gijs Stork: "The reason for SALON/ to come to Aruba is actually a confluence of circumstances. I always have had a strong bond with Aruba, professionally as personally. From the nineties to now I am involved and moved by it's art scene. Together with a few friends we created art exhibitions and publications on the island. It is through them I was introduced to young talents, like fashion designer Percy Irausquin who studied at The Gerrit Rietveld Academie Aruba at that time. And I tried to give artists like him a chance to get feet on Dutchs ground. But it was excually in 2009 that I started to

discover a renewed, younger and progressive art scene in Aruba. I met Ronchi de Cuba who was planning to organize a fashion week on Aruba, called Aruba in Style. I told him about the SALON/ editions we organized in Amsterdam and South-Africa and the idea was born to organize a SALON/ here in Aruba during Aruba in Style, not only to ad a cultural component to the program, but also to celebrate the relation between Aruba, the Netherlands and it's cultural cross-over."

Salon/BLOG: But what makes the Aruban fashion and art-scene according to you worth wile and worth visiting?

Gijs Stork: "There is this appealing energy and new cultural economy going on in Aruba what I also experienced during our SALON/locale in Cape Town, South Africa; a new energy of a young generation free from history, free from anger, free to make unconditional choices about which elements of their heritage they would like to incorporate into their creations. Furthermore, Aruba has a preparation course of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and an academy for Fine Arts & Design will open on Aruba in 2012. And last but not least the island forms an unique hub between South-America, North-America and Europe."

Salon/BLOG: What would you like accomplish with AIS/Salon there?

Gijs Stork: "Wherever SALON/ lands, whether it is Aruba or Istanbul, we aim for discussion and interaction between the local population, the local history and its art culture. Furthermore, we aim for education and reason on different levels and layers. During AIS/SALON over 60 students of Colegio EPI will be trained to be cultural ambassadors of the island and will volunteer for us; we organize workshops for youngsters in San Nicolas, one of the less fortunate cities of the island; But most of all we would like to show the local population what is happening over seas, what is possible outside of the island because it is very hard to get of. To give exposure to artists who came from Aruba but have make a living elsewhere gives Aruba hope.”

Salon/BLOG: Will AIS/SALON be different from the SALON/s in Amsterdam?

Gijs Stork: “No. But maybe more than other SALON/'s, AIS/SALON under stresses the interaction between Dutch and local identity.

Salon/BLOG: How can we detect this cross-cultural identity in the work of the participants of AIS/Salon?

Gijs Stork: “The cross-over will most of all be shown in the way they expose their work, but actually the cross over is already there: most of the Aruban participants work and live in the Netherlands and come to Aruba to return to their birth ground. But in upcoming SALON/ editions in the Netherlands they will express their Aruban identity again.”
